Once you have scheduled to have an appraiser come out and appraise your vehicle. What will you need to provide the appraiser so that they can fully document and provide you with an accurate valuation of your vehicle for its intended purpose?
Most of what is needed should be able to be collected from the vehicle itself, the Vehicle Identification Number, odometer reading, paint codes, trim codes, body code, engine number or casting date.
In order to verify this data your vehicles title or registration will confirm the make model and year of the vehicle and the VIN that is on the title. It’s not uncommon for the title or registration to have an error and not match the VIN, number and letter get crossed and frequently typos are found that are easy to correct, but never the less incorrect.
The vehicle history is you have it can be helpful for rare and collectible cars. Many collectibles have a registry for tracking the know vehicles, while you may not be the listed owner in the registry if the paper trail is good, it can be deduced that it’s the same vehicle.
Receipts, most owner keep track of the service history and upgrades, in many cases those receipts can add value at the time of a claim, you appraiser will want to take photos of that documentation for the report.
Windows stickers are of great value and it’s a comprehensive list of all the options and standard equipment delivered on you car at the time of purchase, your appraiser will want to photograph the window sticker if you have it.
Warranty cards, protect-o-plates, extra keys and magazine articles related to your car are valuable and in many cases the only record of rare dealer installed options.
All of these items will assist the appraiser document you car and properly value it, and to a potential buyer these types of documents are valuable in establishing the history of the car.

02/15/12: SMS 570 Dodge Challenger

SMS Supercars – Steve M. Saleen, know for his endeavors with Saleen Autosport , nearly exclusively a Ford performance tuning, is now bringing out the best in MOPARS.
We have had the opportunity to appraise several of the 500HP Challengers and these cars are quite impressive. Using the Lysholm Supercharger a top of the 5.7 Liter Hemi V8, 6- speed manual transmission, SMS Signature body kit, “Red Butterfly” Induction hood, Carbon Fiber trim, Signature leather interior the SMS 570 can produce a whopping 500HP street legal, 4,189 lbs car that could be ordered directly through participating Dodge dealers for around $65,000.

When it comes to getting your car appraised there are a lot of options available. Appraisal range in cost from $50 to $750 and for a variety of reasons including fair market value, replacement value, prior to loss value and diminished value.
So how do you know what you need? If the resulting report is for your own information, say fair market value maybe you only need a simple report, but if that report is going to the insurance co, or maybe part of a court decision you want to make sure it presents well and includes factual information so that someone who knows nothing about your vehicles can decipher the contents of the report and conclude the report is accurate. Ask you appraiser for a sample report. Does it include market data to back it up? Are the adjustments made itemized so they can be verified? Would this report impress the intended recipient? These are all valid questions when considering having a vehicle appraised.
How about the appraiser. What are their qualifications? Will the appraiser stand behind the appraisal report and can they be a credible expert witness? In the event information and credentials are need to be verified does the appraiser have a valid address in which they can be reached, you can’t subpoena a PO box…
Are you going to be given a certified report? Depending on what the reports intended use it maybe compared to an opposing appraisal report, make sure your report is easy to understand, documents you vehicle to the highest standard and the report contains supporting market data that doesn’t require further research to decipher, many of our competitors fail to provide detailed information in their report, leaving the recipient to “interpret” the contents of the report and the valuation.
